A set of five coins of the same denominations

12108/90, which were forwarded by the Foreign Office on the 7th August, 1890, were found to be of the following standards:

Actual Assay Legal Standard Dollar 884.2 900. Half-dollar 848.2 860. Twenty Cents 807.3 820. Ten Cents 808.0 820. Five Cents 811.1 820.

Assays made in the Royal Mint on the coins now forwarded by Mr. Mitchell-Innes gave the following results:

Actual Assay Legal Standard No.1 No.2 No.3 Mean Dollar 899.8 899.9 900.4 900.03 900 Half-dollar 860.0 859.2 858.5 859.23 860 Twenty Cents 818.0 805.3 820.3 814.33 820 Ten Cents 817.0 817.0 816.2 816.73 820 Five Cents 814.6 813.3 814.7 814.20 820

These results afford evidence of a great improvement in the quality of the metal employed during the last two years, although the subsidiary coins are still seriously below the legal standard.

A comparison of the mean weights of the coins examined in 1890 and 1892 with the legal weights of both the Chinese and Hong Kong coins gives the results shown below:
